Can Wine make Ubuntu better for Ed Tech?

Ubuntu Remains Best Linux Distribution for Desktops

The latest version of Canonical’s Linux distribution, Ubuntu 8.10, still outshines the Linux desktop offerings from Red Hat and Novell, and is the best open-source alternative to Microsoft and Apple operating systems. However, both Red Hat’s Enterprise Linux and Novell’s SUSE distributions are ahead of Ubuntu 8.10 in the server space.

This week in open source: Fedora 10, Ubuntu 9.04 alpha

This was a good week for distro releases—Fedora 10 finally landed and Ubuntu 9.04 reached alpha status. It was also a busy week for SCO. The dying UNIX vendor received and then appealed the final judgment in its dispute with Novell.

IBM Lotus Adds Mac OS X, Ubuntu Linux Support To Symphony Apps

Expanding its efforts to offer an alternative to Microsoft's Office desktop applications, IBM is making its free Lotus Symphony office productivity suite available for Apple's Mac OS X and Canonical's Ubuntu Linux.
