Linux Kernel 2.4 Or 2.6 In Embedded System?

I do embedded Linux and have done so on several generations of hardware and kernel.
There are a lot of slightly incorrect comments here about the size of the 2.6 kernel vs. 2.4. Once you know what your target hardware platform will is, and which subsystems you need, you can tailor a kernel to be usably small by configuring out the parts that you don't need. Linux System Boots Under 3 Seconds!

Lineo--Japan's embedded Linux software vendor--has developed Warp!!2, which enables a low-power Linux system to boot within 2.97 seconds. Warp!!2 consists of a bootloader, a customized Linux software stack, and a 'hibernation driver'. The hibernation driver is Lineo's innovation, which is capable of writing a snapshot of the RAM into flash memory instead of to a hard drive.
