Tools for Migrating from Windows to Linux

Posted in Software  by admin | January 7th, 2009

Taking baby steps to become more familiar with a new operating system can be as simple as revamping the OS already in use on your computer. It begins with unlearning Windows-born behavior to free up your mind for a new way of doing things.
For Windows users, software installation is nearly always accomplished from some sort of simple GUI installer. The idea is basically to keep pounding away on the "next" button until the installer alerts its user Read the rest of this entry »

Ballmer Blasted for Linux Stance

Posted in Software  by admin | January 5th, 2009

November 27, 2006
Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve BallВmer’s declaration that Linux “uses our intellectual property” fanned a firestorm of controversy last week, with Novell Inc. objecting to Ballmer’s characterization of its recent patent deal with Microsoft and some users accusing him of trying to sow fears about using Linux.
At a SQL Server user group conference in Seattle on Nov. 16, Ballmer asserted that every Linux user Read the rest of this entry »

Linux Kernel 2.4 Or 2.6 In Embedded System?

Posted in Software  by admin | January 4th, 2009

I do embedded Linux and have done so on several generations of hardware and kernel.
There are a lot of slightly incorrect comments here about the size of the 2.6 kernel vs. 2.4. Once you know what your target hardware platform will is, and which subsystems you need, you can tailor a kernel to be usably small by configuring out the parts that you don't need. Don't need USB, or video4linux? Leave it out. Don't use modules, unless you need to control Read the rest of this entry »

RE[2]: Android is not Linux, and not an OS

Posted in Software  by admin | January 3rd, 2009

Because, frankly, Linux on netbooks currently sucks. Every cheap Asian brand uses it's own semi-proprietary Linux distribution that is a fork of Linpus, Xandros, or something else. There is no compatibility, no consistency, whatsoever.
That's fine for our tiny contingent of the population who can install/roll our own stuff and put Ubuntu or what the heck we want on it, but that's not going to work for the majority of users out there. So, if they Read the rest of this entry »

Linux Netbooks: What's on the Menu?

Posted in Software  by admin | January 2nd, 2009

I recently carried out a personal quest for a netbook computer.
Relying on a bit of insider snobbery since I write about computer
technology almost daily, I was not expecting a big problem in making a
selection.
It's not that I really needed another computer. My home office is well
stocked with two desktops running Windows
. My
Pavilion laptop with
Windows XP and its very large wide-screen display serves me well as a
desktop replacement Read the rest of this entry »

Linux In 2009 — Recession Vs. GNU

Posted in Software  by admin | January 2nd, 2009

1. It's not free. You still have to train people and migrate data.
Response: But you don't have to pay for the upgrade, more licenses and still have the data migration issue.
2. There is no technical support.
Response: Actually the technical support is far better. Multiple forums exist for most FOSS applications. They usually have the answers too. Have you ever tried to get and answer to a problem with Notes, Tivoli?
3. Not as feature Read the rest of this entry »

Linux/Open Source Security and Maintenance Tips for a New Computer

Posted in Software  by admin | December 31st, 2008

If you're one of the lucky ones who received a shiny new PC under the tree ... congratulations. Twice if it's an Apple. Before you fire up your new baby, you will need to do some maintenance.
The first, if you have a Windows PC, is anti-virus software.
Really. Before you do anything else. I know, you think your PC came with antivirus protection. It may have, but your work is not done. If it came with a trial version, you need to decide if you're Read the rest of this entry »

Lugaru shows why game devs should support OS X and Linux

Posted in Software  by admin | December 30th, 2008

about why developers of videogames like himself should go out of their way to support the OS X and Linux markets. Their game,
, is available on Windows, OS X and Linux, and
, is also being developed for OS X.
Rosen says right out that the prevailing opinion, that the smaller markets aren't worth developing for because the audience isn't there, is just plain wrong -- Mac sales accounted for a full half of
's sales. The people who are buying Read the rest of this entry »
