Maybe, just maybe, the best things in life really are free. Take Linux, for example. It's a great, free operating system that you don't have to spend a dime on. You can use it to run the New York Stock Exchange's servers; you can use it to run your desktop; and you can use it to run your mobile phone.

Qt Software (pronounced cute) gets gussied up with a makeover in Qt 4.5 and also is chosen as a key platform for development on the Nokia S60 smartphone software stack. Qt 4.5 focuses on performance, WebKit integration and 64-bit support. and came to the bottom line conclusion that switching to Apple would be “in the ballpark of $500.” Sure, he put together a vaguely straw man argument in places, and chose to pick commercial Mac software where free software existed, but overall his argument is pretty solid.
The bottom line is this - for people such as Ed or myself, there are costs associated with any platform Read the rest of this entry »

Check out our Samsung Epix review, as we take a look at what happens when AT&T's BlackJack grows up and gets a real job.
The Samsung Epix looks a lot like the Samsung BlackJack, but please don't call it that (BlackBerry's RIM might sue). It's a slab QWERTY phone, but the updated Samsung Epix adds some hardware features to the mix of which the BlackJack never dreamed. Instead of a navigation button in the center of the phone, the Samsung Epix uses Read the rest of this entry »

Here's a thought experiment proposed by the Linux Foundation today: If you had to start from scratch, what would it cost to create a Linux distribution?
The short answer is: about $1.4bn for the Linux kernel and about $10.8bn for the Red Hat Fedora 9 development release, the latest one out this summer.
Because Linux is an open source and sometimes a volunteer effort, both by individuals and by the corporations that have contributed to the Linux Read the rest of this entry »
